Dan Reid
Dan Reid is a youngish trumpet player – or, I should say, flumpet player for he plays a space age version of the cross between trumpet and flugelhorn that Art Farmer made famous. It´s a great, mellow sounding instrument and ´space-age´ if your idea of futuristic is 30s Flash Gordon serials. You´ve got to see it to understand.
But hearing is even better. Dan has been developing his style; it is now fully formed and unique. He likes to play very quietly and he has exquisite control – difficult for a trumpeter at low volumes. He is the next in a long and distinguished line of ´soft´ trumpet players, a line that starts with Miles and Chet Baker and was last seen in the Brazz with Pete Judge. But Dan is different. He might be a cross between Chet Baker and someone like Clifford Brown – or maybe Art Farmer.
