Gig Preview: Ulli Mattsson on the Waterways of Hackney Wick
Scandinavian Folk artist Ulli Mattsson is set to release her debut album, ‘Feral’, over the next few days, in a wonderfully unique way. Over three consecutive evenings in March, Ulli Mattsson will be launching her debut album, Feral, from her Dutch barge on the River Lea.
Between March 16th and March 18th, she will begin a tour of London, with forthcoming gigs along the River Lea and the Regent´s Canal. This slowest of tours will drift across London during the spring and summer, with the first three nights in Hackney Wick. With spaces strictly limited, the series of gigs will give an intimate look into Mattsson´s work and home.
‘Feral’ has been recorded over the past two years, much of it on her previous boat. The percussive, almost shamanistic rhythms of her guitar have their roots in her years of playing fretless bass, while the spacious, simple arrangements hark back further still, to the traditional Scandinavian music of her past. ‘Mother’, the forthcoming single, has been featured as part of the Nordic Voices season on BBC Radio 3. The video for the upcoming single has been directed by Ben O´Connor and Rebecca Lenkiewicz, screen-writer of the Oscar winning ‘Ida’.
The waterways in London are home to a thriving community of musicians and artists that is growing stronger by the year. Supporting Mattsson´s set, there will be music, storytelling, circus and dance by other performers living on the river, and cocktails made from ingredients foraged along the rivers´ banks. These performances will be the beginning of regular nights on the river, as part of the ‘Feral’ tour, with a much longer journey planned throughout the canals of England in 2017.
