Artist description:Jarlath, from Dungannon, County Tyrone, has been playing the Uilleann pipes since he was 10 years old. He learned to play the pipes from Armagh Pipers Club teachers Brian Vallely, Mark Donnelly, Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn and Eamonn Curran. A talented and versatile musician, Jarlath also plays whistle, flute, cittern and has recently been shocking audiences with song. In 2003 he became the first and only Irish person to date to win the prestigious BBC Young Folk Musician of the Year Award, which led to him being invited to play at some of the most prestigious festivals in Europe. He has featured in numerous BBC television programmes on piping and music. Jarlath is a three times ‘All-Ireland Champion’ uilleann piper. He continues to teach music when he can, both in Ireland and Scotland. In 2008 he released his first album, Partners in crime (Vertical Records), with fellow border piper Ross Ainslie. “packs more punch than a boxing-glove factory…” (Irish Music Magazine) “a benchmark for the new generation.” (Scotland on sunday).The album has received massive critical acclaim from the general folk world as well as both Scottish and Irish pipers, and was voted 6th best folk album of 2008 by Mojo magazine, a tremendous achievement for a first album. When not performing solo or alongside his Scottish border-pipe playing partner-in-crime, Ross Ainslie, Jarlath regularly guests with Scottish folk legends, Capercaillie and the thirteen-piece world music band, Salsa Celtica, and in Phil Cunninghams annual Hogmanay house band. In his spare time, he studies medicine in Aberdeen University – well you’ve got to have a hobby!
