Artist description:John Dougherty makes his 5th TOTHAS appearance and his first in over 2 years. Last time John played at a special gig commemorating the 20th anniversary of one of my album´s being released and he kindly kicked off with his version of “Pull Her Apart“ and played a fine set that me and my siblings couldn´t have picked better ourselves... possibly due to the fact that John generously dug out a lot of our favourites. He was thinking about us playing Song Bingo next time, as he has enough great songs to fill a whole evening on his own! There was even some poetry and a rare outing for “Earthbound“. I first saw John play live solo at God´s Little Joke acoustic nights in the early 90´s. Originally from Larne in Northern Ireland, John had a passion for being creative from a young age, including stories, acting and music. He eventually ended up in London and started focusing his efforts on his music. John soon attracted other musicians to join him and formed The Whole World. The band became popular on the London indie-circuit, appeared live on Lucy Longhurst´s GLR show and were reigning champions on Gary Crowley´s Demo Clash for several weeks in the mid-90´s. The band went through some line-up and name changes in subsequent years and under the name Calvin released the “Fashion Is The Enemy Of Duty“ EP at the end of the decade. John returned to playing solo in the new millennium and eventually released his debut album “Songs From The Water´s Edge Part 1“ in 2002 which collected some of the best of his previously unrecorded songs up until this point. Whilst pushing his music, John had rediscovered his love for children´s stories through his work as a primary school teacher. John moved to Gloucestershire and started writing children´s novels and has subsequently become a renowned full-time children´s author, been a member of a successful acapella choir and got actively involved in campaigns to save libraries (appearing on national radio) and hospitals (including a protest EP about this). These days John manages to combine these diverse skills into his music and is a captivating solo performer. His songs range from upbeat pop to moving balladry, with some politics thrown into the mix for good measure. I´m sure John will play an entertaining mix of songs on the night but he has kindly offered to play requests from his huge repertoire, as long as you ask in time for him to rehearse them! So please get your requests in early here! Here´s a brief video of John combining his tunesmith and storytelling...
