Julie Murphy’s remarkable voice, spectrally beautiful one moment and darkly rich the next, has led to collaborations with John Cale and Robert Plant and to Time Out declaring her a ’must see, must hear singer’. Well known for her work with Welsh folk innovators fernhill, she is also a highly regarded solo performer and singer songwriter, admired and championed by the likes of John Peel, Huw Stephens and Verity Sharp. Her solo debut album, ‘Black Mountains Revisited’, an experimental exploration of English and Appalachian folk songs was a Mojo folk album of 1999 and a precursor of alt folk. Her most recent solo album of self written piano songs, ‘A Quiet House’, led The Guardian to declare ‘Julie Murphy is a towering talent, both in traditional music and as a singer-songwriter. She possesses a voice of stark, spectral beauty that recalls Shirley Collins and Sandy Denny. Her singing is hypnotic and trance-like, a serene stream of sound finding majesty in minor-key melancholy.’

She has toured globally both independently and with the British Council. Festival appearances include Womad, Greenman, Lorient, Celtic Connections and the Hay Literature festival. In July 2013 she performed in ‘Songfest’ alongside Eddi Reader and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh of Altan at the Earagail Arts Festival as part of the Derry/Londonderry UK City of Culture celebrations.
