Folk Bands and Artists
Namvula
Oxford
Namvula effortlessly weaves together a global soundscape that takes inspiration from the deep grooves of Africa, the lyrical sensibility of folk-pop and the improvisational freedom of jazz. Born in southern Africa to Zambian and Scottish parents, her music reflects the realities, nuances and complexities of a diasporic restlessness.
She is to release her third compilation of work this year (2023). Our common humanity in these distressed times is her preoccupation.
She is “A true original…a soulful performer” * * * * The Guardian
One of the few Zambian artists performing in Europe, Namvula has collaborated and shared the stage with artists including legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, multi-award winning Zambian singer Maureen Lilanda, and sitarist Anoushka Shankar. She is working with some of the UK’s most respected African, jazz and folk musicians, including Mercury-nominated Led Bib bassist and producer Liran Donin and saxophonist Chris Williams, percussionist Mamadou Sarr (Baaba Maal), and guitarist Jack Ross (Cerys Matthews, Lucy Ward).
