Sesh Grenade
Newcastle upon Tyne
Four words - Bag. Pipe. Session. Explosion. That’s the aim of the Newcastle upon Tyne quartet Sesh Grenade! It’s a warts and all approach to distill the joy of improvised traditional music-making from the North East.
The quartet formed when Queen of Northumbria, HRH Kathryn Tickell, asked Kieran Szifris (octave mandolin) and Sam Partridge (flute and uilleann pipes) to play some tunes after a big show at the Sage Gateshead. They both brought in fellow band members; Joe Truswell from Monster Ceilidh Band, on drums and Jordan Aiken from Pons Aelius, on Border Pipes.
This quartet, enhanced by Szfiris’ electronics, was able to make a great big noise, shaking the glass and steel facia of Sage, prompting Kathryn Tickell to retort “They’re quite good aren’t they”. Holding that in their hearts they hope to bring their brand of “quite good” improvised folk to the world! Take Cover and wait for the Sesh Grenade Disco Party!!
