Album Review: ´Bedlam´ - Kelly Oliver

Album Review: ´Bedlam´ - Kelly Oliver

Already gaining much attention from the musical world, Kelly Oliver’s second album ‘Bedlam’ provides a full and luscious Celtic inspired sound. Her smooth voice floats over the intricate guitar and violin lines, balancing strength and detail superbly.

The single ‘Jericho’ is a stand out track, the accordion that runs throughout working with the harmonies and violin to create a thick, full sound. Lyrics here are highlighted through the dropping out of instruments, varying the texture of the song, and thus making it stand out. This is bouncy, cleverly produced and very catchy, making it no wonder it is quickly getting Kelly noticed.

The simplicity of ‘In the City’ makes it a stand out track on the album, highlighting the strength in Kelly’s voice, with pared down accompaniment from the guitar and brief harmonica interludes. The soaring quality in particular, as her vocals rise over everything around her further adds a very free quality. The purity and tone of her voice however is partially tarnished by her confusing accent, as whilst her music has very clearly been influenced for the better by Irish folk, the Irish inflections seem bemusing.

This is full, classic folk with its heart in the right place and a powerful voice, Kelly Oliver is definitely one to look out for the next year.
