Save Jamboree Protest

Show your support for keeping the grassroots music venue Jamboree open!

Tower Hamlets council could put the closure of Jamboree on the agenda for their last council meeting of the year. We’re planning a musical show of strength before the meeting, to show councillors and the mayor how many people care about Jamboree. There will be musicians performing so come along and join us outside the town hall from 6pm, before the meeting starts at 7pm.

More than 9,000 people have signed our petitions, we’ve had stories written about us in the press, and many bands, performers and organisations are showing their support for us, including London’s Night Czar and the actor Sir Mark Rylance.

We have asked for:

1. The mayor of Tower Hamlets to intervene and ask Sudbury Properties to revoke their decision not to renew Jamboree’s lease.

2. Tower Hamlets council to review the application for Cable Street Studios, the building where Jamboree is located, to be awarded the status of an asset of community value. The application was declined without due process being followed and without steps for appeal being provided.

3. Tower Hamlets council to recognise that if Tower Hamlets wishes to become the London Borough of Culture, it must take actions to support the venues that are providing the lifeblood of cultural life in the borough.
4. The mayor of Tower Hamlets to ensure that any future development plans will include Cable Street Studios´ cultural value and protect its community.

Without action, Jamboree is due to close at the end of March. Jamboree has had its home in the heart of the East End for almost a decade, providing a stage for musicians from around the world and a focal point for the local community.

The landlord, Sudbury Properties, gave no reason for refusing to extend Jamboree’s tenancy. However, redevelopment proposals for Cable Street Studios, the building housing the venue, were online until last week when the page was taken down. The building is home to commercial tenants and Jamboree is the last remaining night-time business. A proposal to the landlord from Jamboree’s owner that the lease be extended four months, allowing it to celebrate its tenth birthday was also rejected.

Jamboree Closure

All of us at Folk and Honey are deeply saddened by the imminent closure of Jamboree, the beloved East London music venue. We have been asked to share the following message from the Save Jamboree Team.

I am writing to ask for your help. The much loved music venue Jamboree in Limehouse is due to close at the end of March. Jamboree has been a thriving grassroots music venue in the heart of the East End for almost a decade. It has hosted countless musicians and performers from around the world and is a focal point for the local community.

The landlord, Sudbury properties, has given no explanation for refusing to renew Jamboree’s lease, although the building has previously been earmarked for redevelopment, this is no longer the suspected reason for the refusal of the lease extension. A proposal to the landlord from Jamboree’s owner that the lease be extended four months, allowing it to celebrate its tenth birthday was also rejected. There are now only six weeks before a yoga studio is due to take over the premises, leaving the community set to be disbanded.

A strong team are working on a ´Save the Jamboree´ campaign which is due to launch at the beginning of next week.

We would like to post the clips we receive on our campaign page and hopefully they will help bring more awareness to our campaign. Here are some ideas for talking points that might be helpful:

1. Jamboree is one of 94 grassroots venues left in London, many having been forced to close in recent years.
2. The landlord is refusing to renew the lease. Remember that it is no longer about the planning application.
3. We are fighting for the landlord to reconsider and to keep Jamboree open for as long as possible.
4.Good music is being squeezed out of London by developers.
5.What the Jamboree means to you (if you have visited).

I know that you are probably very busy but please spare us just a few minutes and help us to save Jamboree. Support the campaign and help ensure yet another London gem won’t be forced to close. This is about Jamboree, the musicians and the community, but also about uniting to speak up for the future of live music in London.
