The Trials of Cato

The Trials of Cato

"One of the real discoveries on the folk circuit in recent times" – Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2

There´s been a lot of talk recently about the band The Trials of Cato, and their debut album "Hide and Hair". After finally getting to see them live I can understand why. Originally from North Wales and Yorkshire, The Trials of Cato formed whilst living in Beirut, and spent a year boiling down the roots of their sound into a hybrid of traditional influences. Returning home from Beirut in the winter of 2016, they have since torn a shape very much their own into the canvas of the UK folk scene.

Seen live the band has a warm, lighthearted and full sound that stems from some serious musicianship. They certainly know how to handle an audience and have the easy, open banter of experienced buskers. Their gig in Chester was a sort of homecoming - they often used to busk in the town and plenty of the crowd were singing along to their favourite numbers. Songs varied from driving foot stompers like the "all purpose protest song" "These Are The Things" to intricate traditional arrangements such as "My Love´s in Germany" and were always engaging and lively. The three voices are well-matched and instruments include mandolin, banjo, Irish bouzouki and guitar.

The Trials of Cato are touring widely this spring and summer - if you have a chance to see them live then grab it!

Hide and Hair is now available on Spotify, Amazon and iTunes.
