Paperface mostly works alone. From his lighthouse studio, where he has built up an analogue haven in the old light room, the choppy waters of the Thames lie in one direction, and the urban sprawl lies in the other. He rarely plays live and never publishes any photos of himself. His acclaimed first album ‘Out of Time’ received rave reviews and spawned a host of fans thanks largely to BBC 6 Music, where songs such as ‘Amsterdam’ and ‘A Bigger Man’ were ably supported by Lauren Laverne, Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie. The vinyl edition sold out at Rough Trade in only a few weeks.

There are influences: His first album was described by Richard Smirke in the Big Issue as ‘a gorgeously rich slice of crystalline pop that evokes classic records by the Walker Brothers, Love, and Burt Bacharach… an exquisite debut album…” However, the sound is his own, beautiful and darkly funny songs, tinged with irony and rich in observation.

He is now hard at work on a follow up album, intended for release later this year. Having commandeered a barge, he and the band have set off round the waterways of the English countryside in their floating studio. The first single ‘Idiot’ was again supported by BBC6 Music, and also by John Kennedy on Radio X. It was also chosen by Geoff Lloyd on Absolute Radio as his Record of the Week.
