“Kirsty Merryn is a folk singer and composer of extraordinary skill.... destined to be a big star. ****” Sunday Express

Kirsty Merryn is one of the most unique singer songwriters on the UK folk roots scene, performing original and traditional songs on piano and voice. Kirsty’s music is heavily anchored in the folk tradition, with jazz and classical influences. She weaves a spell over the audience as she tells stories via piano-based songs with sharply observed lyrics, and delivered in crystal clear, soaring vocals.

In 2020 Kirsty released her highly anticipated second album, “Our Bright Night”; tales of the supernatural, the dying of the light and of the land. Its a reflection on our relationship with the world we live in, both real and imagined, and the way in which ignorance to social issues can result in devastating results. The album was produced and engineered by Kirsty and independent producer and musician Alex Alex and mixed by BBC Folk Award winner Ben Walker. It takes full advantage of Kirsty’s pure voice and deft piano skills, placing the piano firmly at the centre of the songs. There are guest appearances from folk legends Phil Beer (Show of Hands) who provides violin on opening track “The Bands of the Sweet Primroses” and Sam Kelly who joins Kirsty to perform a duet on track “Shanklin Chine.”

She is now back with the band Show of Hands and historian and broadcaster Michael Wood OBE FSA for Songs of the People. The show takes us on a chronological journey through 800 years of English radical songs. Michael provides the historical context and the three musicians create the musical settings to songs that are the soundtrack to the People’s History. From the Great Famine and the Peasant’s Revolt in the 14th century, the English Civil War, the Diggers and Levellers, Peterloo, the Chartists and Tolpuddle Martyrs these songs shine a light on the lives of ordinary men and women through times of struggle and hardship as they fought for the rights that are ours today.

She recently started working with the amazing Ciderhouse Rebellion on a new album that tells the tales of some historic jobs that, for whatever reason, don´t usually make it into folk songs. In early November, she, fiddle player Adam Summerhayes and accordionist Murray Granger spent a week together in the beautiful Yorkshire moors devising, writing, and recording, and the resulting album was released on 2nd June 2023. Adam and Murray are both incredible musicians, with a unique and exciting way of working. What they´ve created is something pretty magical.
