Nordoff Robbins Get Loud Campaign

Nordoff Robbins

Nordoff Robbins is the largest independent music therapy charity in the UK, dedicated to changing the lives of vulnerable and isolated people. They support thousands of people in their own centres and by working in partnership with a wide range of organisations including care homes, schools and hospitals. When delivered by a trained practitioner, music therapy can be used to support people living with a wide range of needs. It can help a child with autism to communicate, reduce anxiety for those living with dementia or provide comfort and celebrate the life of someone facing terminal illness. Music therapy can be life changing for so many people.

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is a specialist use of music that aims to facilitate physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, and to promote the development and retention of key communication skills. A wide range of instruments can be used in music therapy, including the voice, and the music created is often improvised. Nordoff Robbins music therapists support people to develop their own ways of being musical in order to explore their potential and connect with the world around them. The approach is person-centred and music therapists are trained to work flexibly in a range of settings with people of all ages, responding to their specific needs. Some sessions happen on a one-to-one basis, others in small or large group settings.

Human beings can’t help responding to music – it changes the way we move, feel and think. And we don’t just react to music – we interact with each other musically all the time using our voices and movements. Helping people to develop musically aids their ability to experience rewarding interaction with others. In the hands of a trained therapist, music can bring a wide range of benefits – cognitive, emotional, and physical – on individual, social and communal levels.
