A New Music Venue for Struggling London

A New Music Venue for Struggling London

The awful news came this week that one of the most cherished folk music venue in East London was within days of closure. The owner has asked me not to name the venue name until they have a good plan in place to save it but, due to paperwork errors they are facing an enormous VAT bill with just days to pay. Thanks to assistance from the Music Venues Trust they now have a lawyer negotiating with HMRC and fingers crossed, the venue can somehow be saved.
As we are all painfully aware, the past few years have been catastrophic for London´s live music venues which have been hit by spiralling rents, the deliberate targeting of developers and a general lack of government support. We have lost several treasured spaces including Passing Clouds, The Gladstone and No.14 Bacon Street.

There is however a glimmer of hope....

The Gladstone, in Borough has reopened after a local campaign blocked the redevelopment plans. The new owners are programming some live music (soul, jazz and folk). London bluegrass band The Vanguards report that it has been refurbished as an upmarket gastro pub with nice staff. They were given a meal, drink and whatever the reasonably generous clientèle put in the hat. Perhaps now would be a good time for you friendly promoters to go get something proper going on there again.

I also hear that the indomitable Eleanor Wilson has still not given up the fight to save Dalston´s world and folk music venue/club Passing Clouds. Latest reports suggest she has a good legal case and is confident the legendary venue will one day return to is Richmond Road warehouse home after being forced out by deeply underhand developers.

Finally some amazing news. Harringay´s Jam in a Jar are opening a new venue in Stamford Hill! Jam in the Jar is an intimate café/bar/venue on Green Lanes much beloved by London´s folk musicians.  Jam in a Jar have had their own battles with the VAT man but business must be good because its a great new space they have taken on. Balabam!
