On Thursday the 20th of April, chill folk quartet The Nightjar played at the at the Green Note with support from Nina Harries and her double bass Nancy.

The Nightjar are a lo-fi psychedelic folk group who have gained national renown in a very short period of time. After their Boiler Room debut went viral, the band shot to underground fame. Now, fresh from the completion of their first full length album, Objects, The Nightjar are touring the UK on top form.

The support act, Nina Harries, began the night by introducing herself and Nancy, her beloved double bass. The pair then treated the room to some polished comedy cabaret and haunting melancholy melody which somehow blended together perfectly. The effect was ethereal, weird, and plenty of fun.

When The Nightjar took the stage, their relaxing brand of folk flowed naturally through the vibe that Harries had created. They played songs both new and old, but each was polished to the point where you couldn’t tell the difference between the two.

Mo Kirby’s voice has a pure and haunting quality that recordings simply do not do justice. Their cover of ‘The Maid Freed from the Gallows’ was a particular highlight; Kirby found the songs poignancy and never let it slip, savouring every line.

When listening to The Nightjar, you might find your head in your hands, with heavy eyelids, and an idly tapping foot if you’re one of the lively ones. Their unique brand of folk will put you in a place so that’s so relaxed, you’d be in danger of slipping into your wine glass, were it not for the fact that their talent is so arresting.
