2015 sees Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, winners of the 2014 BBC Folk Award for Best Duo, embarking on an exciting new project. They plan on recording their new album, Watershed, with an extended line up, and are offering this brand new four piece to a limited number of shows to tie in with the album launch.
´We´ve honed our sound as a duo, and do a lot of multi-tasking to enlarge that sound, but when we heard these guys performing, we knew we wanted to involve them in our next project´ says Hannah. They first met bass player Matt Downer playing with legendary Welsh band Jamie Smith´s Mabon, and soon had him working on their last studio album, Mynd. ´Working with Matt is a real pleasure,´ says Phil, ´He´s an incredibly intuitive musician with echoes of Danny Thompson in his sound´.
James Taylor completes the line up, on percussion and vibraphone. Phil says, ´We saw him performing with singer-songwriter Sean Taylor, and couldn´t get over the sensitivity of his playing, and his constant innovation – you´ve never seen someone play drums like this before´. He combines a classical background with a feel for world and folk musics.
The result is The Watershed Band, a unique collaboration that takes Phillip and Hannah´s innovative duo sound to the next level of soulful expression combined with rhythmic drive
