Mobius Loop Live at The Magic Garden

Mobius Loop Live at The Magic Garden

Möbius Loop returned to the Magic Garden pub in Battersea on Thursday 21st of January, to a mixed crowd of cheerful dancing fans and locals. The group, made up of four varied musicians, draw influence from a range of genres far wider than the ´gypsy folk´ title they´re given. From Indian to country, their unique blend is both jolly and eery by turn, switching from piece to piece.

Possibly their finest sound comes from their more string based arrangements, the mix of cello, double bass, violin and piano (a classical arrangement used un-classically) creates a range of rich melodic songs. The vocals, with Katie Ryan´s (the only female member) high quavering voice rising above the low sound works to great effect. Whilst the bassier element is cemented through the amazing and incredibly solid double bass line (that runs throughout all their music).

Countering this ethereal sound, the majority of their music is fast paced, many taking on the folk sound of a sea shanty. The fast paced lyrics and emphatic shouting is reminiscent of a folk Gogol Bordello, something which can also be seen in their dramatic dress.

The lyrics throughout are often political, and particularly tackle animal rights, an aspect which due to its strong stance may put some off. The clear emphasis on aesthetics they have furthermore may scare some away, their hats do change throughout several times and the mix of Indian, junk shop and festival attire in which they dress is unusual. However by and large this adds to the joyous effect of the bands music, easy to dance to and above all fun.

This is a gig to go to for the joy of it, sing along, dance and enjoy the wonderfully varied music of Möbius Loop.
