“What a breath of fresh air. You continue to give voice to simple truths. It’s got so much heart.” – Lambchop pianist Tony Crow
We are thrilled to announce the release of the single ‘Closer Than’ by UK based singer songwriter Sophie Moore. The first single from the forthcoming album ‘Trouble in Mind’ marks the artist’s return to the music industry after a long hiatus. ‘Closer Than’ will be available on all major streaming platforms on 13th March.
Dancing gracefully between Alternative Country and Adult Contemporary, Trouble in Mind is soaked in hope and laced with decorum. With peaceful percussion, glassy guitars and a playful piano, there is a sense of storytelling that feels both personal in its inception and yet universal in its appeal. “Closer Than” the first single of a promising album campaign is wistful and elegant.
Sophie Moore is an artist that toured internationally as part of the London indie group Foggy Cry during the 1980s – a band formed with her brother Julian Moore. This was an era where the band shared the stage with Hawkwind amongst others. Sophie then went onto develop her own songwriting and regularly perform with acoustic guitar in folk/roots venues and support the likes of Labi Siffre during her solo career. She has also collaborated on a range of other artist’s projects including releasing tracks on Okra Records in the USA in the early 1990s with Jeb Loy Nichols. More recently Sophie provided backing vocals on Nichols Seasons of Decline EP produced by her brother Julian Moore. A soon to be released duet with Ashley Slater (Freak Power) is also on the cards but Sophie’s focus is on her long-awaited album campaign for which Closer Than is the first single.
Sophie’s career choices have largely supported the goals of others through her work as a therapist. For over two decades, Sophie has worked in various forms of professional therapy with experience in both physical and mental health services. But the year 2026 sees the return of Sophie Moore’s longest creative passion, the art of songwriting and performance. Having teamed up with Producer Mark Nevers and members of the Alt Country legends Lamb Chop, Sophie’s album Trouble in Mind also features a slew of other Nashville session players who were on board during the recordings which took place over several creative weeks in South Carolina USA and Sussex UK in 2025.
A fan of the Nashville country-soul band since the peak of their acclaim in the early 2000s, Sophie’s connection was via Jeb Loy Nichols who had recorded his 2006 album “Now Then” with Mark Nevers in Nashville and who encouraged her to send rough demos of the songs.
“I’ve been a fan of Sophie’s from the first time I ever heard her sing. She’s as good as good gets. And she keeps getting better” Jeb Loy Nichols
These seasoned pros had the talent to lock down a great-sounding album in just a few days if they like the songs, and that’s exactly what they did when Sophie travelled to Pawleys Island, on the South Carolina coast to record her carefully stashed songs. Spending her breaks watching sanderlings at the tideline on the island’s broad sandy beach, Sophie and the 4 - strong band completed 10 stunning tracks in three days. Following her return to the UK, overdubs were added via studios in Nashville and Sussex.
Mark Nevers, who produced and played guitar on Lambchops greatest albums – including ‘Nixon’(2000) and ‘Is a Woman’ (2002), has also worked with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Andrew Bird, Bill Callahan and Candi Staton. The top musicians on ‘Trouble in Mind’ include pianist Tony Crow (Lambchop), drummer Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver, Sylvan Esso), guitarist William Tyler (Lambchop, Silver Jews, solo) Paul Niehaus (Lambchop) electric/ lap steel guitar and horn player Roy Agee (Prince).
“Don’t stop taking chances/Don’t be afraid of the cost/Live the stuff of dreams before the time is lost”
Closer Than
The lyrics feels apt; Moore’s unfinished business with the music industry is a blessing to anyone that gets to hear it. Perhaps the greatest creative work in her musical career to date, the result is a Nashville inspired adult contemporary catalogue of songs that are graced with the essence of an English rose that blooms once again.
“Sometimes it’s difficult to grasp talent with demos - but once Sophie started singing in the studio, it was obvious she was gifted with a sublime voice and a natural instinct of how to use it” – Mark Nevers
