Emma Gale - Album Review
Emma Gale’s self-titled debut album brings together a portfolio of original songs written over the course of 9 years. Despite its long gestation period, the songs and arrangements are mostly consistent in their exploration of traditional themes of love, relationships, and nostalgia, and are firmly rooted in Americana and country music.
‘Let’s See What The Earth Has to Say’ and ‘Showbiz’ delve into more contemporary issues of our dependency on materialism and consumerism, as well as celebrity culture and social media. I’ll be interested to see if Emma continues to develop this more contemporary and observational song-writing style as I feel it’s in these songs where she most successfully finds her own voice and expresses her world view.
The album has tasteful musical arrangements throughout with a nice mix of upbeat country songs, contrasted with more stripped-back contemplative ballads such as ´Meet You By the Bridge´. Musical contributors of note include award-winning songwriter and composer Dan Whitehouse and Ivor Novello Award nominated songwriter Boo Hewerdine. The production is also serene, particularly when the vocal harmonies kick in!
Honest, nostalgic, and soulful, Emma Gale’s debut album is a promising first release and I’m excited to see where she’ll take her song-writing next as she continues to develop and hone her craft.
