EP Review - Erik and the Worldly Savages ´Break Free´

The latest release from Erik and the Worldly Savages consists of knees-up folk-punk songs with a modern message: Break Free from the constraints of the western system and travel the world through the virtues of digital nomad culture.

Through his music and philosophy Erik seems to imply that digital nomadism is the future to ‘living for ourselves’ and finding ‘our own voice’; moving towards a transcultural utopia where everyone is a global citizen and no longer confined to the place of their birth.

Lyrically the songs stay thematically on point, throughout this double album. Drilling the message home, you really can’t ignore Erik’s vision for a digitally globalized society. However, I will be interested to see if future releases give some focus to some of the inherently trickier aspects of digital nomadism; for example, the effect it has for local people and more traditional economies.

Musically its all good fun. ‘Glass Cage’ is my favourite track with a catchy instrumental melody and some nifty gypsy-esque violin work, somewhat akin to bands such as Gogol Bordello.

Erik & The Worldly Savages have big plans for a world tour in 2023 and I can see their unique brand of folk-punk going down well within expat communities and festivals.

Catch them around the globe and prepare to Break Free!
