Album Review: Grásta´s Golden Light glows with warmth, energy and promise

Grásta (meaning "grace" in Irish) are a new folk outfit whose debut album, Golden Light, is set for release on 21 June 2026. The band brings together the musical talents of Gus Glynn, Mark Woolley, Ian Jones, and Ben Robertson. Together, they craft original songs that explore contemporary themes while also breathing fresh life into traditional material.
What really stands out about this album is the raw, visceral energy the band has managed to capture. The overall approach appears to focus on preserving the playful dynamics and interactions between the musicians—something that can only truly be achieved through predominantly live recording. Rather than opting for a clinical, pristine sound, Grásta embrace a more organic approach that retains the colour, warmth, and spontaneity that are so vital to folk music. Chris Lee also deserves special mention for his excellent work behind the recording desk.
The album offers fantastic variety, both in its arrangements and in its choice of songs and tunes. Tracks such as “The Galway Shawl” give a respectful nod to tradition through a gentle and soothing rendition of the much-loved Irish ballad. Elsewhere, songs like “The Lake” take a more driving approach, propelled by a stronger rhythmic pulse and soaring double-stopped fiddle lines. The addition of sitar on this track is an unexpected but welcome surprise, adding another layer of texture to the arrangement. The final track "Kaleidoscope" also offers a satisfying blues influenced introspective conclusion with some fine acoustic guitar finger-picking.
Grásta are a compelling new addition to the folk scene. With appearances already booked at folk clubs and festivals, they are certainly a band to keep an eye on. On the strength of Golden Light, it seems likely that they will go from strength to strength in the years ahead.
