Album review: The Sun Never Sets — Elgin and The Marbles’ punchy political debut

The Glasgow indie-folk outfit blend folk-rock and pop-punk energy with sharp, satirical takes on a turbulent decade of UK politics.

The Sun Never Sets is the debut album from Glasgow Indie-folk outfit - Elgin and The Marbles. Taking inspiration from the raw energy of punk combined with venomous and satirical lyrics, they give an often damning social commentary on the turbulent trials and tribulations of UK politics over the last ten years.

The band is led by frontman Callum Baird, whose background lies in journalism. This is evident in Baird’s ability to convey shrewd political analysis in a poetic and artistic manner. Tracks such as ‘The British Museum’ seamlessly offer a concise critique of British colonial history whilst being delivered in a lighthearted and sardonic tone. Similarly, the song ‘Stop The Boats’ successfully manages to critique the recent political obsession with anti-immigration sentiment through a historical lens.

Musically, the album draws heavily from pop‑punk and folk‑rock, at times echoing contemporary folk‑punk voices such as Frank Turner or Beans On Toast. It feels like a deliberate choice: the instrumentation is a little rough around the edges, serving primarily as a vessel for the lyrical punch. That said, it’ll be interesting to see whether the band expands their sonic palette in future releases, adding more musical variety to match the depth of their themes.

Overall,The Sun Never Sets delivers a blend of thought‑provoking commentary and tongue‑in‑cheek humour, wrapped in high‑energy melodies and raw punk‑rock gusto. It’s easy to imagine these songs being well received on festival stages or in rowdy bars—though perhaps the folk clubs might find them a touch too raucous.
