Review- ´Lanterns´ EP by JANA

Review- ´Lanterns´ EP by JANA

When you look back at the classic 70´s folk-pop sound a key element is the mixture of the familiar with the unexpected. This element is very much apparent here in the EP ´Lanterns´ by London based Singer-Songwriter JANA. Each track has at its heart a progression or lick that will be familiar to most, but chopped and spiced just enough to make it her own. The comfort with which these tracks play with dropped bars and harmonic crunch could well be due to JANA´s history, having played with progressive rock outfit “Persona Grata” in her native Slovakia.

Standout tracks here are the opening “Birdhouse” and closer “Dunes”, the later of which sits somewhere between the well-travelled folk of Paul Simon and the intimacy of Tracey Chapman. The purity of Jana´s voice easily attracts such lofty comparisons, with Joni Mitchell also being brought to mind through the smoothness of the vocals and the arrangement approach. Overall this is an expertly performed record that is accessible without being simplistic, a great sign of things to come.

The EP launch party gig will on 10th October at the Empire Bar in Hackney, London.
