The Morning Tree is an international trio that blend the songs and tunes of the Irish music tradition with the sounds of folk-blues and jazz. With their combination of vocals, guitars, bouzoukis and fiddles, the trio aim to reinvigorate the accompaniment of Irish traditional song, seeking new avenues of interpretation that move with the melodies, weaving around them and playing tricks where it can.
The band was first formed in Florence in 2011 by Eoghan O´Shaughnessy, Consuelo Nerea Breschi and Matteo Podda to explore the tradition from an outsider´s perspective, detached from what was considered the imperative and not allowing historical restrictions to impede their imagination. As a trio, Consuelo, Eoghan and Matteo performed and travelled around Italy for three years before deciding to record their collection of songs, instrumentals and tunes. Their eponymous debut album was released in August 2014 to great critical acclaim. Shortly after its release however, Matteo decided to leave the band in order to pursue a solo career as an Italian singer-songwriter, releasing his interpretations of Woody Guthrie´s Ballads of Sacco & Vanzetti. Eoghan and Consuelo then recruited Lindsay Straw, a talented American singer, guitarist and bouzouki player to take Matteo´s place, and bring her own range of songs and ideas into the band´s repertoire.
“In the singing and playing of Consuelo, Eoghan and Matteo, these fine old tunes sound fresh and beautiful once again. Influences abound - nice touches that enrich the listening experience. I think I detect many - not least Bert Jansch and Pentangle - for that I´m grateful. What rides above it all though is the love and respect for the music - which after all is what keeps the spirit alive. Fair play Morning Tree.“ - John Renbourn
