Blending folk, soul and electric blues into a refreshingly timeless sound, June has enjoyed a meteoric rise that has seen her being hailed as one of America’s brightest new talents. From humble beginnings busking on the streets of West Coast America to astonishing audiences with a performance on Later…with Jools Holland, touring with artists like Norah Jones and Jake Bugg, June also joined the bill to support The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park.
‘The Order of Time’ is Valerie June at her most impressive and accomplished to date. The record – the follow up to 2013’s acclaimed ‘Pushin’ Against A Stone’—weaves electric blues, African rhythms, cosmic atmospherics and delicate soul into an inventive rumination on love, family, struggle and the passing of time. Produced by Matt Marinelli (Bad Brains), ‘The Order of Time’ features twelve original songs all written by June.
Musically, June has refined and expanded her sound on the new album finding space in its artful, self-assured restraint and overall cohesion. On the spiritual “Astral Plane,” June’s mystical vocal takes an otherworldly turn, whereas the sumptuous string arrangement on ‘With You’ is reminiscent of Nico’s most affecting work. Norah Jones adds her distinctive vocals to three tracks and “Shake Down” sparkles with background vocal contributions from her father, Emerson Hockett and brothers, Patrick and Jason Hockett.
