Fionna Duncan & Brian Kellock

Fionna Duncan & Brian Kellock

Glasgow

With her care-worn voice and bruised and bluesy phrasing, Fionna Duncan has been living the life she sings about since the mid 1950s. She´s been through the skiffle and trad jazz booms, singing with Scotland´s internationally popular Clyde Valley Stompers and attracting the attention of American jazz label Riverside Records on a US trip in her teens that could have seen her move permanently to the home of jazz.

In London in the 1960s, she sang with Humphrey Lyttelton and Kenny Ball and in the 1970s she toured Europe, the US and Canada before, in 1985, she formed her own backing trio with pianist Brian Kellock and father and son rhythm team, bassist Ronnie and drummer John Rae.

Since then she´s sung with bands large and small, including Warren Vache and the Ryan Quigley Big Band and wherever possible she´s had Brian Kellock as her own personal orchestra.

A musician of phenomenal resourcefulness, Kellock can draw on every style of jazz from the classic era through to near-Cecil Taylor free expression - often in the same solo. He is - and has been - the accompanist of choice for musicians and singers including Stanley Turrentine, Sheila Jordan, Scott Hamilton and Carol Kidd, and his recent solo piano album, Bidin´ My Time was described by London Jazz News as ´immaculate and deeply felt´ and featuring ´Kellock’s sublime artistry at the piano.´
