Album review: Birdbrother ‘Counting On The Sun’

Album review: Birdbrother ‘Counting On The Sun’

Birdbrother’s Counting On The Sun is a serene, hypnotic folk album that gently draws you into its dreamy world.

Birdbrother are a dynamic folk duo consisting of accomplished musicians Philip Stapley and Paul Beadle and they have recently released their latest album, ‘Counting On The Sun’. Blending together mysterious yet soothing vocal deliveries with ethereal flute lines, they create a beautiful soundscape with depth and warmth.

Their music incorporates elements of progressive folk and psychedelic music akin to some of the 60s and 70s English folk stalwarts such as John Martyn and Roy Harper. Their songs explore themes of love and spirituality and their musical soundscapes bring these themes to life in their dreamlike quality. The slow meditative tempo of most of the songs gives the listener plenty of time to ponder over each line and melodic phrase, letting the luscious harmonies wash over you. However, I would also be keen to see how they weave in some of their more driving numbers alongside their signature dream-like texture in a live setting.

For this reason, ‘Do You Remember’ is my favourite track on the album. Its driving guitar led groove gives the song a sense of momentum and direction whilst the flute lines drift and float above the vocals giving a wistful sense of nostalgia which compliment the lyrics perfectly.

Overall, an enjoyable and thought provoking album which is full of mystery, melancholy as well as at times a dreamy optimism.
