Album review: The Meteonic Cycle ignite acoustic virtuosity on ´Celestial Mechanics´

On their debut album, Benjamin Lamy and Lény Garcia fuse folk, flamenco and metal-inflected virtuosity into a high-energy acoustic journey that balances dazzling technique with moments of striking restraint.
French acoustic guitar duo The Meteonic Cycle are releasing their debut full-length album Celestial Mechanics, bringing an energetic fusion of folk and flamenco, with a healthy dose of metal-inspired guitar solos.
The album starts with the punchy, rhythmical piece “Cepheid”, before moving into the Spanish guitar–influenced piece “Vespera”, which again starts strong and bold before breaking down into a more contemplative section. This gives the guitar melodies a chance to sing over the broody chord sequence before crashing back into another highly percussive section.
It is clear that Benjamin Lamy and Lény Garcia have played together for a long time; their technical playing is impressive, and the way they gel together, becoming a singular musical unit is rare. The overall energy of the album is a fever dream of manic yet exquisite guitar playing, but they also interweave more soothing sections and tracks, which provide good variety and often function as a calm before the storm. The later track “Levitation” employs a serene string section over more broken, arpeggiated chords, which elevates the overall emotional palette of the album.
The album is heavily percussive for just two guitars, and it is sometimes hard to tell if the driving rhythms are purely from extended Spanish guitar techniques or whether they have been overdubbed after. I’m sure this would all be revealed after seeing them in a live show - hopefully they make it over to play in the UK soon!
