Blowzabella announce their long farewell

Blowzabella announce their long farewell

After nearly five decades at the forefront of the British and European folk scene, the legendary band Blowzabella have announced that they will disband in 2028, marking their 50th anniversary with a celebratory final flourish.

Formed in London in 1978, Blowzabella have carved out a truly unique place in folk music history. Their inimitable drone-based wall of sound—fused from English and European folk traditions and driven by infectious rhythms—has influenced countless bands across the continent. Over the years, they’ve created a catalogue of original tunes that have become standards in the modern British and European folk repertoire, played in sessions and dances across the world.

The current lineup features a stellar cast of long-standing members: Andy Cutting (diatonic button accordion), Jo Freya (vocals, saxophone, clarinet), Paul James (vocals, bagpipes, saxophone), Benoit Michaud (hurdy-gurdy), David Shepherd (violin), Barn Stradling (bass guitar) and Jon Swayne (bagpipes, saxophone).

“We’re fortunate to have achieved far more than we ever dreamed was possible and nothing lasts forever,” the band said in a joint statement. “Most bands don’t even last 10 years. Against all the odds, seeing the 50th anniversary on the horizon is extraordinary… We’re all happy with the decision and are determined to enjoy the music for another 3 years.”
