Scottish songwriter Emma Miller releases a stunning new single ‘Siren’

A fan of artists such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Sarah McLachlan and with a first class degree in Songwriting under her belt, Emma Miller has been capturing fans through the compelling power of her piercing vocals and heart-wrenching songwriting over the last decade. Cult magazine CLASH noting "her folk-hewn work has blossomed into something remarkable”, Spotify deeming her track ‘Sail Away’ fit for their ‘Duvet Day’ playlist and BBC Radio Scotland giving air time to all her self-released projects of recent years.

Today, the Edinburgh-based artist has a focus on community over vanity metrics. She regularly shares new songs with her supporters on Patreon, has independently sold out shows in Scotland, gigged across the USA and in Spring 2025, she moved to Tennessee to spend 3 weeks deep in the countryside recording her debut album with producer Nick Bullock at Freda Recording.

Miller is the epitome of a fully fledged independent artist, working with a fiercely loyal fanbase who directly support her work. The Scottish songstress has been navigating an alternative music career, seemingly passing under the industry radar for several years. In Summer 2024, this took the form of a VIP weekend for 25 of her top supporters who flew in to join her in North East Scotland from as far as Hawaii, Colorado, Hanover, Romania and Berlin. Together they experienced a taste of life in her home region of Morayshire, filling their time with beach walks, intimate performances at her family home, a bespoke whisky tour, pub lunch and a beautiful gig at Gordon Castle’s Walled Garden, all organised entirely independently by the artist.

At 35, Emma Miller continues to reject the traditional industry blueprint and is embracing her most creative era to date with the launch of her debut album, ‘I Want to Be the Anchor’. The record explores the themes of love, loss, the question of wanting children, and the empowerment of taking the time to get to know oneself through those dark moments of terrifying existentialism. Growing disillusioned with the process of releasing music on streaming and underwhelmed by the chase of a ´viral moment’, Miller is withholding 50% of the record from DSPs, making it exclusively accessible via vinyl, CD’s and digital downloads. Accompanying the album is a series of films showcasing intimate behind-the-scenes footage of how several of the songs came to life in the studio, inviting her fans to get even closer to her creative process.

‘Siren’ is a lament for the suffering of others and a call to hold on to our humanity as we bear witness to it. The song was written in response to the devastating and relentless coverage of genocide, world conflict and the seemingly giant chasm of pain that divides us from one another. It follows the perspective of someone becoming apathetic to the world around them as they begin to lose their sense of hope, their compassion and even their sense of self. Ultimately, it’s a song asking if we are capable of overcoming our differences in the name of peace for all.
