Where Irish traditional meets contemporary classical: MÁM at Brighton Dome

Acclaimed Irish concertina player Cormac Begley and contemporary classical collective s t a r g a z e perform as part of award-nominated dance show MÁM at Brighton Dome this February. Playing live on stage alongside twelve dancers, they build a haunting musical landscape that blends traditional Irish melodies with European classical contemporary music.
Described by The Irish Times as ‘90 minutes of ritualised ecstasy’, MÁM takes inspiration from the ancient landscape and history of West Kerry, Ireland. Having grown up in the region, Begley draws on folk tunes learned from his family and local musicians, weaving Irish cultural heritage into his concertina performance. Begley is joined onstage by Berlin-based orchestral collective s t a r g a z e, known for blending modern composition with alternative, pop, and indie music. s t a r g a z e breathes contemporary life into classical works by composers like Telemann, placing them in conversation with Begley´s traditional sound.
The musicians work in tandem with visionary dance company Teaċ Daṁsa. Led by acclaimed choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan, in MÁM Teaċ Daṁsa summon a whirlwind of myth and magic, moved by Begley and s t a r g a z e’s collaborative music making. Nominated for an Olivier Award, MÁM has enjoyed sellout performances at Sadler’s Wells and across festivals world-wide.
MÁM plays at Brighton Dome for two nights only:
10–11 February at the Concert Hall
