Originally known as Scunthorpe Civic Theatre, the Plowright Theatre was built in 1958. A traditional proscenium-style theatre with a 330 seat auditorium, it was re-named in the 1990s in recognition of the achievements of local actress Joan Plowright.

Founded by her father, Bill Plowright, the Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club staged the theatre´s first performance (Peer Gynt) in 1958. Since those early beginnings, the basic auditorium´s shell has changed very little. Apart from technological improvements to enhance the sightlines and acoustics, the main structure is still the same as the original designs.

The theatre stages a mix of professional music, drama and comedy; alongside productions by the many amateur societies who make the venue their home. A number of hugely famous acts have performed at the theatre over the years, including comedian Lee Evans who, as part of the theatre´s 50th anniversary in 2008, performed a low-key warm-up show for his arena tour.
