Album Review: Lucie Hendry expands the harp’s horizons on ´Ashes to Art´

From Scottish folk roots to global rhythms and jazz-tinged textures, Lucie Hendry crafts a richly layered and deeply personal instrumental journey that feels both grounded and exploratory.

Lucie Hendry is a Scottish harpist who now resides in Denmark. Her latest release ´Ashes to Art´ is centred around her original harp compositions which are influenced by the traditional music of her homeland, however, the arrangements and instrumentation of the album help push the music in a more contemporary and expansive direction - representative of her own personal and musical journey. The album is largely instrumental and introspective but the introduction of vocals towards the end of the album provides an uplifting conclusion.

Her harp playing has a soothing, whimsical and fluttery touch, whilst the infectious drum grooves help to give the music an eager sense of direction and momentum. Melodically, Lucie clearly takes inspiration from far and wide - Some of her phrases sound akin to the sound of West African Kora, whilst others bear similarities to modal jazz music.

Track 6, ‘Story of Job’ is my personal favourite. The tonality and groove suggests a mysterious yet fragile optimism, which when combined with the drum grooves, becomes an exciting and hypnotic track. The guitar solo certainly has some crunch to it which adds some interesting sonic tension. This track epitomizes Lucie Hendry’s talent for exploring a wide ranging emotional palette in an enticing way.

´Ashes to Art´ is a bold album, ambitiously taking the gentle sounds of the harp and serene influences of Scottish folk music into a more challenging and biting direction. The versatility of her music makes it a perfect fit for festivals and art centres alike. She seamlessly blends influences of folk, jazz, global beats and progressive music, truly making a sound of her own.
