Renowned English folk singer-songwriter Reg Meuross returns with Stolen From God, a rigorously researched song cycle exploring the legacy of England’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.

Reg Meuross’s Stolen From God project has been mounted as a major statement in his long career. Developed over four years of research into oral histories, church and public records, and family trees, it confronts uncomfortable truths about how wealth, power and identity in parts of Britain were built on forced labour and human suffering.

The album—released in April 2023—features collaborations with kora master Suntou Susso (also credited as Jali Fily Cissokho) and concertina virtuoso Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, along with narration to contextualise each song. The live show presents the songs interwoven with spoken introductions, offering audiences both musical and historical perspectives. 

Critics have described Stolen From God as “a beautiful, powerful and important album” (Arts Desk) and “an ambitious, often unsettling song cycle” (The Guardian). It has also been lauded as perhaps his most considered and profound work to date. Americana UK called it “a stunning and important work of historical research set to some of the best folk tunes you’ll hear this year.”
