With his fiddle playing described as “Exquisite, passionate playing” (Scotsman) and his film composing as “Extraordinary” (The Times) and “One to look out for, a rising star” (Howard Goodall, Classic FM), Alastair Caplin has already made a heavy impact on the UK music scene since his emergence as a professional musician. Alastair has appeared on many albums from both the Scottish folk scene and the thriving East London folk scene, with many writing credits for these. He has performed in some of the UK´s most prestigious music venues including The Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican, Shakespeare´s Globe - both with bands and as a solo artist - as well as just about every major UK Music Festival.
Alastair started playing music from a very young age, being first sat down in front of a piano aged 5. After over ten years rigorous training and worldwide performing in Choral and Operatic music, he turned his attentions back to his roots with more traditional Scottish approach to his fiddle playing and singing. He toured and recorded with renowned Scottish folk singer/guitarist Alasdair Roberts for two years while living in Glasgow, and has been a full time member of the driving Scottish power trio The John Langan Band for over eight years now.
In 2014, Alastair composed the score for the feature film The Silent Storm (2014, West End Films) which premiered and the London Film Festival, starring Damian Lewis and Andrea Riseborough. For more information on this and other film/theatre work, follow the link to Film & Theatre Music.
Now residing in East London, Alastair appears regularly around the city playing a large variety of bands when not on the road with The John Langan Band. Every Tuesday evening, he runs a traditional Scottish & Irish session at Jamboree Venue in Limehouse, accompanied by London´s finest Scottish ex-pat musicians.
In February Alastair will be recording his debut solo album.
