Album Review - Jules Ahoi: ‘MAGNOLIA’

MAGNOLIA (The Bauhaus Tapes) is the latest musical offering from German singer-songwriter Jules Ahoi
The album was born out of a unique opportunity: to live and write at the Bauhaus Dessau world heritage site, where Jules Ahoi stayed in the Master House, once the residence of Hungarian painter László Moholy-Nagy.
Whilst the album is steeped in the history of the Bauhaus, Jules Ahoi’s music is a personal, genre-bending exploration which he defines as artfolk. Electric bass and drums give the tracks a strong rhythmical foundation whilst Jules´ delicate baritone voice beautifully interweaves between intricate and expressive string lines.
The track Parallel Sky perfectly exemplifies Jules Ahoi’s unique musical palette. The keys and guitars provide an indie-esque harmonic backdrop for Jules’ somewhat spoken word delivery to narrate the tale. The cello lines throughout this album are subtle and carefully chosen, helping to create a timeless, folk inspired poignancy.
Jules´ effortless vocal delivery sits at centre stage throughout the majority of the tracks. Intimate, to the point where you feel that each word is spoken directly to the listener. However, certain lines are further emphasised by ethereal female backing vocals, which add to the wistful quality of the album.
Emotive, personal, with excellent production, MAGNOLIA (The Bauhaus Tapes) is an engaging listen for any readers who lean towards indie and electronica inspired folk.
