Album Review: Sam Thorpe – Hopeless Romantic

With wit, warmth and a quietly confident charm, Sam Thorpe’s debut Hopeless Romantic turns tales of tangled hearts into something irresistibly human.
Sam Thorpe’s debut album ‘Hopeless Romantic’ was released in late 2025 and explores the trials and tribulations of love. Recorded in his shed in Norfolk, Sam’s warm and understated lead vocals provide honest and at times comical odes to love in all its many forms and wonders. Stylistically, it loosely fits into the genre of country music, but it seamlessly blends other influences into the album such as jazz, pop and of course the folk influences of his home in Norfolk. His carefully layered instrumentation and influences from a broad range of styles has certainly helped him to define his own unique style.
Thorpe’s track ‘Stuck’ represents the most straight up country track of the album. Its up-tempo driving acoustic guitar part accompanied by a snare drum shuffle give this tune an infectious groove which fits the more comical tone of the lyrics of this piece. He cleverly personifies various inanimate objects such as caffeine and asthma to create a humorous and light-hearted country love song. This is definitely some of his more imaginative and raw lyricism and it will be interesting to see if he explores this style more in future releases.
Other songs such as ‘Fell for You’ have a timeless feel and could easily pass as a jazz standard. The slightly meandering feel of the backing vocals in this piece give it a very organic sound which draws you into the piece and makes you feel as if you are sat there with Sam on his shed porch, with his friends jamming the song on a Sunday afternoon. The lyrics are perhaps not as original as the previously mentioned ‘Stuck’ but they still successfully articulate some of the more universal themes of love.
Thorpe’s velvety voice is the highlight of the album, and is simultaneously inviting, reassuring and intriguing. His vocal lines are executed with a relaxed precision which fits the gentle backdrop of the music. Light-hearted, emotionally vulnerable and warm, this is an honest country album which is gently infectious.
