Suntou Susso – JALIYA SILOKANG: The Path of a Griot

Gambian kora master Suntou Susso brings his contemporary griot sound to London tomorrow, Wednesday 12 November, with a special album launch concert, celebrating heritage, culture, and environmental responsibility.
Hailing from a celebrated griot lineage, Suntou Susso’s new album JALIYA SILOKANG – The Path of a Griot reimagines traditional storytelling through a contemporary musical lens, blending Afro-Manding rhythms with folk, jazz, funk, and Afrobeat influences. Recorded in Senegal and the UK, the album features 24 musicians from 10 countries, including acclaimed guests Vieux Farka Touré, K.O.G., and his sister Binta Suso.
The 10-track collection explores themes of family, migration, love, and cultural legacy, sung in Mandinka, Suntou’s mother tongue. The lead single, “Yirolu Bala,” inspired by a Mandinka proverb meaning “The Earth’s wellbeing is within the trees,” promotes environmental awareness and aligns with the work of Green-Up Gambia.
Suntou sees the project as both a tribute to his ancestors and a call to action for today’s generation, highlighting the role of the griot in preserving culture and inspiring change.
The album launch concert takes place tomorrow, 12th November, at 229, London
